Week 9

#23
Some parts of ACL Learning 2.0 I enjoyed and some I found frustrating, like when I tried to insert a picture and couldn't find the straight-forward way to do it. I think at times I created problems for myself by not doing things the simplest way possible, but trying to find things that interested me. I really felt a sense of achievement when I managed to insert the video that would play on my blog.
LibraryThing is a resource that I would use again, and I can see the use of wikis and RSS feeds. This Learning 2.00 experience has taught me about a range of technologies I haven't used before and ways to access them. Yeah!!!!!

Week 9

#22
I created an account in Netlibrary and added some books to my favourites. 'Home with your ancestors' about researching family history through the Internet is one that I might want to read. Under the keywod 'writing' I got 'The Art of Writing' by Robert Louis Stevenson I might be interested in and Kate Grenville's 'Writing from Start to Finish'.

Week 9

#21
I had a look at the tutorial on Podcasts, and investigated Podcast. net looking under the Arts, both Performance and Books listings. I located one in Yahoo Podcasts I wished to listen to but was unable to without downloading software which I didn't attempt to do. Here is the link to Arts Festivals under Podcast.net

Week 9

#20
I went into YouTube and played a few of them. I'm not sure why I would want to watch 1970s TV commercials, 'my mummy said I could' a modern day ad is quite funny as is Conan the librarian'. The link from '60s music videos' said 'this video has been removed due to terms of use violation'. The libray school video showed how YouTube can be used for marketing resources to customers. YouTube videos could be used by the library to promote an event in an unusual way or briefly convey information through action. They would need to be eye-catching or poss. dramatic to grab the attention of people who use YouTube and have a vast number of videos to choose from. I looked at a video 'biblical relic or clever hoax' Geographic has various info videos. I have chosen the video Census of Marine Life, because I enjoyed the visuals of this world and the use of the video to emphsise its importance.

Week 8
#19
I looked at the category Books under the Web 2.0 Awards after glancing at the overall categories. Some of the sites such as Technorati under Blog Guides we have looked at earlier in Web 2.0. Under Books the Lulu.com - Self Publishing - Free site seemed to be a networking tool with Forums but also a way for people to advertise services and pay for tools to download and books. Some tools and services are free, and the group activities would be. I found it somewhat frustrating trying to find which were free. When I looked under Events they were all in America, which wasn't useful for me.
http://www.librarything.com/ I have previously looked at to select books and I like this and being able to look at the latest covers and details. Biblio.com could be good for trying to locate old books - they had various Poenamu entries under John Logan Campbell. I looked up Art Books and it came up with a range at reasonable prices and had the NZ price as well underneath the American. When I looked up Beeby the educationist as a word in the title I came up with compltely unrelated books, but when I entered it as a keyword and selected Search AU/NZ only I came up with a whole list of relevant ones mainly that he had authored, because of this option in particular I would find this a useful site.
Week 8
#18
I enrolled in Zoho Writer and looked at the templates, and the range of options such as speadsheets and organisation, where you can put appointments, and the writer documents. I managed to put an image of an amazing circle of some of the Parnell staff into Zoho but when I wanted to put this in a poster or leaflet I was unsuccessful at getting past the original template.
I switched to google docs and inserted the picture and some text at:

http://docs.google.com/Doc?id=d65kcsp_1c5v78zfm

I enlarged and added text.
I did initially email the picture through to the blog but it came up huge in a separate post, and I've I deleted it.
Week 7
#17 Playing around with PBWiki
http://acllearn.pbwiki.com/

On the ACL Learning Wiki page I entered this blog part way down under Favourite blogs page, creating a space for it. I entered details under 'favourite holiday destination' linked to my blog, and added 'Bel Canto' by Ann Patchett to favourite books creating a link through to LibraryThing. I just put the link in to the ACL Learning Wiki above. I found the clicking into editing and then saving afterwards pretty straightforward.

Week 7
#16
St Josephs County Public Library System had set up a pathfinder wiki for subject guides; only librarians could edit this material, so there was restricted access. I looked up the last changes which were 'recommended local and family history websites' by Libby the Librarian. Princeton Public Library used 'BookLoversWiki' as a summer reading club for adults, the reading club participants and library staff all contributed to putting reviews onto the site. I see wikis as good for collaborative projects - access can be restricted to a certain group such as the librarians within a network of branches or more open to the public, such as library customers around a topic. As shown in the Youtube video rather than exchanging emails on a particular project, information can be collected together by different people on a wiki. In an open wiki I think there needs to be a check, a monitor, in terms of the information on the levels of accuracy, spammers etc. I can see wikis could be useful for research, projects, and documentation, and a way of sharing resources and thoughts at a distance but viewable by others. The Durham County Library used a wiki in the development of their strategic plan.

Week 6

#14 & #15
Entering "Learning 2.0" in Blog posts as a phrase brought up a listing of 1,779 results. Some I explored were discussing it as a tool, or events in relation to it 'Learning 2.0: A Colarado Conversation'. Kentucky library geek 'Chronicles of Bean' seemed to be doing similar things to us, she talked 'getting wiki with it'. E-Learning Queen tells about her favourite feedreaders. Victorian Public Libraries had completed Learning 2.0 and had links to their many libraries. You could spend days going to these different sites and to other sites. There's a 'Librarians Matter' blog - yes they do! There were a lot less tagged sites than there were blog posts - some relating to the same site appeared one after the other. Blog Directory brings international blogs together - some of mine came up in Spanish.
Under the popular blogs 'Blog Tips to help you make money blogging' and 'Lifehacker, tips and downloads for getting things done'weren't a surprise . Under top searches I was surprised that 'google' and 'youtube' were way below 'elfyouself' about putting your face on a dancing elf!

Week 6
#13
I enrolled in http://del.icio.us/
and have inserted the tags on the computer (I'm not sure if we were meant to do this).
I could not find 'several habits of wildly successful Del.icio.us users' - it seems it was put on in 2005 and may have been removed as too old. Through the search option keywords of 'Slacker Manager' there was 'Several habits of wildly successful twitter uses'.
I liked the Youtube 'Social Bookmarking in Plain English' which aimed to keep it simple.
I had already explored tags to some extent in Flickr looking through tags like 'frogs' to find a group of photos submitted by many different people under this tag. I looked at items within the tag cloud and added some of them.
The material that comes up may not always be relevant to what you are looking for depending who has added to the tags. I can see that adding tags and making these available to other people in your area within a subject or within a library system could be useful on a particular subject.
Week 5 Cont

#12
I installed the Rollyo icon into the template.
Below is a link to the searchroll I created on Rollyo to the list of related websites for New Zealand history, and I've checked I can access it and through the list to the sites.
It could be a useful tool having lists of relevant sites.

Week 5

#10 Image generators

Staff with Poetree from the Rose Festival Rose Gardens turned into a puzzle, missing a few pieces, from FD toys, imported the picture across from 'My Pictures'. With the leaf I got the reflection but not the water moving as in the generator image - the effect without the movement..when you click on Fotline the moving image does come back.

#11
I added fourteen books to my library under Library Thing, mainly older volumes, I was intrigued by the pictures of the covers and how they could be arranged 'judging a book by its cover'. I spent quite awhile getting the link established in the Template of my blog to my selection in Library Thing - getting a link that worked. The books available under 'Amazon' and 'Library of Congress' could give quite different lists, for example I found surprisingly many more books listed under Amazon for 'John Logan Campbell' than Lib. of Congress - authored and written about.

Week 4

This week I've been looking at RSS feeds. It has taken me several attempts to link my bloglines feed link into the template. I incorporated into my list a few from other people's blogs at ACL - from one I linked into 'National Geographic News' and through another into 'Podcasting News'.
'Boing Boing' a weblog of 'cultural curiosities' is popular through Technorati, but didn't appeal to me. Through Technorati I also located a basic tutorial on Skype. A search for 'New Zealand poetry' under 'topix' brought up Michele Leggott as NZ Poet Laureate, but also seeming unrelated topics like 'Amazing Grace' played on bagpipes. I entered 'libraries' into Syndic8 and got a list of possibilities, but couldn't incorporate 'Library Techlog' into my list as it said it had no associated blog. Most of my list I got through Bloglines either from the list of top 1000 or through their search option.
